This week's task is to; Find a local example of a building or facility that's transferred to community management.
Find out:
Who was involved in the enterprise?
Where is it located?
What does it look like?
What obstacles where encountered in setting it up?
How was this process empowering, in your opinion?
OR
Think of a social enterprise that you would like to see set up in your community:
Who would it involve?
Where would it be located?
What would it look like?
What obstacles would you encounter?
Who would benefit from it?
How would they benefit?
Now post your findings (a couple of paragraphs) on this Wikiprojects page.
Here's our first entries please add yours to the list;
Project 1 Cath Findlay, Social Enterprise 3/12/12
Who would it involve?
Anyone who was unemployed and needed help to reenter the workplace. Local craft people, local community
Where would it be located?
Inverness/Dingwall
What would it look like?
It would be a craft supplies and craft retailing shop that would have space for craft workshops and a cafe. We would provide employability skills and have various organisations come to use the workshops. Local craft people would be able to sell their goods and be employed to run the workshops on a rolling programme. Satalite craft fayres and craft workshops would be run in community halls Highland wide. Other retail outlets would open in other areas across Highland. We would have an on line shop
What obstacles would you encounter?
Initial setting up costs. Rent/rates. Because of the social mission staff have to be employed to manage the volunteers. Business plan. A leader to take the visions forward.
Who would benefit from it? +How would they benefit?
Volunteers would have new skills and be more employable Local crafts people would be able to make a living selling their goods and teach others. Business skills and support Local people would have more craft skills and potential to make money selling their goods Adults with disabilities could use their self directed support to access training and workshops Other community groups could be involved e.g. school, Scouts, Rainbows, faith groups, SWRI, The wider local economy Tourists would buy localy made goods/ sell to other organisations Culture:-Dying traditional crafts would not be lost and others created Everyone involved:- improved social capital, sense of community and wellbeing
Project 2 Lindsay Lumsden 4/12/12 I've written mine up on the blog if anyone wants to check it out: http://lindsaylumsden.wordpress.com/
it's about our local development trust taking on adult learning provision in the area.
Formerly a local authority sports facility for over 40 years
What obstacles where encountered in setting it up?
Negativity that the local people would actually be able to avoid losing the facility to ....a housing development.
How was this process empowering, in your opinion?
There was a huge feeling of success locally when the transfer had taken place. A real sense of community working together to create a sustainable project for the people.
I am working on setting up a Social Enterprise along with an economist fro the Highland Economic Forum. Without wishing to give too much away about what is, after all, a business proposition, I will illustrate the background for you all. With the ageing demographic comes a fear in the public sector that already stretched services will be swamped. Whatever we can do in prevention, whether MH, Falls, inclusion-based, will in the long run save the public purse for acute cases.I went to the HEF some months ago because I felt that they were missing the point : that the Older People in 20 years time are my generation of Babyboomers. With 50 years of good healthcare behind us, we do not expect to become a burden on the state until our 90s at the earliest!Concentration of economic development effort of youth placements as an incentive to work is mis-placed. Businesses and services in future will be more web-based, and micro-businesses offering services to Older People will be an even greater chunk of the Highland business community than it is at present.
I have proposed a Social Enterprise which will :Who : provide an umbrella body operating services to Older People.Where : across Highland, pilot probably in NairnWhat : a brokerage for SDS and benefits, an accreditation system for small businesses (gardening and cleaning), and a contractual/admin service offering payroll, insurance, flight booking, internet shopping safeguards. What obstacles : too many private sector business set-ups in competition before brand established. Poor buy-in from Public sector. Claims of anti-competitive behaviour from existing business.Who benefits : anyone over 50 who requires services but needs reassurance. LA/NHS may outsource services via Umbrella Body. Customers have choice and are not labelled or processed. How : steering group established, Funds applied for, scoping done, public sector consulted. Pilot designed so that rapid expansion can take place. Businesses have confidence in continuity of contract, legacy and growth.
